Canada needs its dairy supply management system

Trump wants us to get rid of our “nasty” dairy supply management system, and tariffs on US dairy products.

To do so would ultimately make us dependent on the US to meet a basic nutritional need.

The US subsidizes its dairy farmers. It pays them to, in effect, overproduce milk and cheese products. More than needed to meet the American consumption. Gallons of milk are discarded everyday instead of being processed into milk and cheese products.

Canada ensures its dairy farmers make a decent living while producing an adequate supply of milk at a set price. That’s why it’s called supply management, right?

If Canada gets rid of its supply management system and eliminates tariffs on dairy products imported from the US, cheap milk and cheese products will flood Canada, Canadian dairy farmers will lose their farms, and we will be dependent on the US for this basic nutritional need.

We can have cheaper milk and cheese in exchange for dependence on a foreign power that has proven itself to be entirely self serving.

Personally I don’t think it’s worth the extra $450 per year the average Canadian family supposedly spends on dairy products compared to American families.
